I have been confused and frustrated by the whole in network/out of network thing since I got to this country.

So am I and I’ve lived here all my life.

Actually, I don’t even have health insurance at this time so the whole system is what confuses and frustrates me.

What’s even better is some doc you never heard of can stick his head in your room, then bill insurance for his “consultation”. That he’s not in your network, and you were never given the option of not “seeing” him makes it all the more insane.

We’ve got some of the best medical systems in the world ruined by the absolute worst health care system in the world.

So now, somehow or other, “insurance” is not to be had for any price. You simply cannot get coverage that will protect you from multi-thousand dollar charges. Not even if you meticulously do everything right.

Could it be that the laws are not well written? Because from what I’ve read in the NYT about this, it is entirely legal. BS, but legal BS.

Disgusting!

I think I read something about this in a page by Backwoods Sleuth not too long ago— 2 weeks? It’s an NYT article about health care horror stories. It mentioned the whole ‘consulting doctor—out of network’ scam.

Yes she (?) did but that was a different scam. In this case it isn’t a consulting doctor — it’s the regular ER doctor. The hospital is in network but the doctor isn’t. Cute, huh?

Yes, here.

One of the regional hospitals here closed abruptly last week. It was non-profit but sold repeated to for-profit entities who relied on outsourced ER personnel (all “out-of-network”).
The employees were given no notice and are protesting loudly.

It’s been like this for decades…ever since the concept of HBOs and managed care were instituted. It’s nothing new, just getting more expensive.
